EMDR & Brainspotting Therapy

I have been using EMDR extensively since 1994. It is a powerful brain processing therapy that helps with all kinds of trauma, anxieties, and physical symptoms.

I have been using Brainspotting, which is a newer therapy technique, discovered by David Grand, Ph.D., since 2007. It is closely related to EMDR and involves the client visually focusing on a point in front of their eyes. Recent research is helping to explain how brainspotting facilitates healing of traumas held in the brain and reflected in the body. Visually connecting with the brainspot provides access to the midbrain where the emotional/limbic system holds the trauma memory and often keeps a person in an emotionally dysregulated state, i.e., fight or flight or freeze, hypervigilance, or collapse. By processing the memories with bilateral/right brain-left brain stimulation, in the activated limbic system, these memories can then become regulated again, and that regulation is felt throughout the brain and body. These interventions appear to provide more lasting results than those accessing the prefrontal cortex (isocortex), most usually used in logic, and "talk therapy".

Brainspotting and EMDR can be used to treat:

• Distressing memories, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder
• Sexual abuse, physical abuse, emotional abuse
• Dysfunctional life patterns
• Medical traumas
• Anxiety, fears, nightmares
• Preparing for future events such as test taking, public speaking and sports performances
• Physical symptoms that are related to psychological causes

Sand Tray Therapy

Sand Tray Therapy is a hands on, creative, symbolic process in which the client puts objects in the sand tray to create a world, or picture, or story. It is very expressive and can be calming, as the client is processing inner issues both verbally and non-verbally.
